Waipu Highlights & Natural Wonders

The Waipū coastline is one of Northland’s most stunning stretches of shore, where golden sand, turquoise water, and dramatic headlands come together to create a perfect seaside escape. Just minutes from Waipū township, Waipū Beach (also known as Waipū Cove) is the heart of the area, popular with families, surfers, and holidaymakers alike. The long sandy beach is patrolled by lifeguards in summer, making it safe for swimming, while reliable waves attract surfers year-round. Behind the sand dunes lies a spacious reserve with picnic tables, BBQs, and a playground, along with handy facilities and the Waipū Cove General Store where you can grab fish and chips or an ice cream after a swim. It’s a lively spot during summer, filled with locals and visitors enjoying the sunshine, but still offers plenty of room to find your own patch of sand.

Just up the road, Langs Beach provides a quieter, more secluded alternative. With its soft white sand and clear blue water, it’s often described as one of the most beautiful beaches in Northland. Langs is the place to go for a romantic stroll at sunset, a peaceful picnic, or simply to enjoy the sound of waves with fewer crowds. Together, Waipū Beach and Langs Beach capture the relaxed, unspoiled charm of the region’s coast.

Linking the two is the spectacular Waipū Coastal Walkway, sometimes called the Waipū Coastal Walk. This track follows the cliffs and farmland between Waipū Cove and Langs Beach, offering breathtaking views over Bream Bay to Sail Rock and the Hen and Chicken Islands. Along the way you’ll discover hidden coves, rocky outcrops, and lookout points perfect for photography. The walk is moderate in difficulty and best enjoyed in clear weather, rewarding those who take the time to complete it with some of the most impressive coastal scenery in Northland. Together, Waipū Beach, Langs Beach, and the Waipū Coastal Walkway showcase the very best of Waipū’s coastal beauty.
