Waipū Gorge Scenic Reserve is free to visit year-round, located off Waipū Gorge Road about 15 minutes from town. A short track leads from roadside parking to Piroa Falls, with native bush, river crossings, and picnic spots making it a peaceful place to explore after rain or on a summer’s day.

Location & Access

Located off Waipū Gorge Road (signposted from SH1 at Brynderwyn), the reserve is around 7 km along an unsealed gravel road. Parking is informal and limited—arrive early, especially after rain. A perfect starting point to explore some of Northland’s most striking natural landscapes.

  • Piroa Falls (Waipū Waterfall): A 20‑metre waterfall nestled within the gorge, accessible via a short 200 m return track—ideal for a family walk or quick scenic stop. 

  • Scenic Walking: Well-marked paths lead through native bush, across the gorge, and past rugged terrain—trails are suitable for most fitness levels. 

  • Wildlife & Flora: Expect sightings of native birds such as tūī and fantail, mingling with the vibrant greenery of ferns, limestone walls, and ancient podocarps. 

  • Ahuroa River Crossing: The trail includes a notable concrete slab bridge engraved with “Rotary 1983” that crosses the scenic Ahuroa River.

Distance & Difficulty: Easy ~200 m return walking track, about 5–10 minutes; just enough steps to remind you you’re in nature. 
Best Time to Visit: The waterfall is most dramatic after rainfall, while summer invites refreshing dips in the natural pool.
Facilities: Minimal—no toilets or visitor amenities. Pack accordingly.
