1. Waipu Coastal Walkway

The Waipu Coastal Walkway is a scenic coastal track offering stunning views of the rugged shoreline between Waipu Cove and the surrounding headlands. Much of the path winds through native bush, providing shade and shelter while still offering occasional views out to the ocean. Along the way there are opportunities to access small rocky coves where swimmers sometimes stop for a refreshing dip. The track can become slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

2. Waipu Cove Beach Walk

Distance: ~9.5 km return
Difficulty: Easy – Moderate

The Waipu Cove Beach Walk is a long, relaxing coastal walk along the sandy shoreline of Bream Bay. The route stretches between Waipu Cove and the Waipu River Mouth Wildlife Refuge, offering wide ocean views and plenty of space to enjoy the beach. It’s a beautiful walk during sunrise or sunset, though visitors should check tide conditions as crossing the tidal stream near Waipu Cove can require wading during high tide.

3. Waipu Cycle & Walkway

Distance: ~5.3 km
Difficulty: Easy

The Waipu Cycle & Walkway is a developing shared pathway connecting Waipu Village with Waipu Cove Beach. Designed for walking, running and cycling, this community project provides a safe and scenic route between the township and the coast. Sections of the track are already completed and are popular with locals enjoying an easy recreational walk or bike ride.

4. Langs Beach Scenic Reserve Walk

Distance: 1.6 – 2.6 km
Difficulty: Easy – Moderate

Located just south of Waipu, the Langs Beach Scenic Reserve walk takes visitors through native forest filled with birdlife. The short loop track offers a peaceful bush setting with occasional glimpses toward the coast. The reserve is a lovely place for a relaxed walk, and the nearby beach provides an excellent place to stop afterward.

5. Waipu Caves Track

Distance: ~4 km
Difficulty: Moderate

The Waipu Caves Track begins at the Whangārei District Council reserve and winds through forest and limestone formations before reaching a scenic lookout. The walk climbs gradually through bushland filled with native plants and interesting rock features. Near the start of the track, a short side path leads to the famous Waipu Caves, where visitors can see impressive stalactites, stalagmites and thousands of glowworms.
